It bears repeating that no definitive plans or photographs of the automaton exist. Though several books have been written on the subject, the remaining evidence consists only of guesses by educated people of its day and a few letters or articles written by people who directed the automaton — and even those sometimes contradict one another. The previous scene is my personal best guess as to how the illusion worked.
