Napoleon’s retreat

The Conflagration of Moscow was an enormous mechanical diorama that Maelzel created to celebrate Napoleon’s Pyrrhic victory in 1812.

The woman in the last panel, Nannette Streicher, along with her husband, is the owner of the piano factory where Maelzel is renting shop his space. It’s said that Beethoven favored their pianos, even going so far as to help sell them.
