Allen had this to say about Maelzel’s relationship with Schlumberger:

Their connexion had lasted so long, they were always so much together, their manner towards each other was such, that an opinion grew up, among our German citizens [in Philadelphia], at least, that Schlumberger was a near relation, or an adopted son, of Maelzel’s; nay, some thought him to be actually his son.

In reality, Maelzel employed an assistant named Fischer and his wife to help with the show in Havana — and they both deserted him immediately upon Schlumberger’s death.
