Philidor was indeed quoted as saying that his match against the automaton was the most exhausting of his life. Since a good percentage of the strategy behind champion-level chess is figuring out your opponent’s behavior patterns and expressions, playing a giant, wooden-faced puppet must’ve been extremely difficult.
