When Dr. Mitchell began to reassemble the automaton, he found that Maelzel had mixed the parts of his automata together across many different crates, presumably to deter thieves and secret-hunters — though I suspect it may also have been due to his condition when he packed up the show for the last time. Dr. Mitchell found himself searching through not only the crates he’d purchased, but others still in Mr. Ohl’s warehouse , and it took him several months to find all the parts, reconstruct the ones that had gone missing, and figure out how it all went together.
