This scene takes place in the Café de la Régence , the premier chess club in Paris, and by extension, the world. “André” is André Danican Philidor , who in addition to being the top-ranked chess player on the continent, was also a very famous composer — though by this time he had retired from his musical career to focus more intently on chess.
I’m compressing time a little here; in June of 1783, Philidor was visiting London, but this lets me introduce the Café as a setting early on; it’s a place you’ll see a few more times throughout the story.
