By this point in history, enough had been written about the automaton that it was generally known to be von Kempelen’s invention, as opposed to Maelzel’s.

Guillaume Schlumberger was born in Alsace, and like Maelzel, spoke a half-dozen languages with ease. I’ve assumed here that they spoke to one another in French or German when not around other Americans.
